Glehn Von Loh

Congratulations Glehn Von Loh
This week, we are featuring our Rising Star recipient, Glehn Von Loh (Class of 2015), who is currently working as a program assistant for the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

GLEHN, WHAT WAS YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE AT SJR STATE?
My involvement in the Student Government Association (SGA) was my most rewarding experience at SJR State. I learned a lot about myself and grew academically, professionally, and personally. SGA gave me a sense of belonging by presenting opportunities to engage with the community, organize events, attend conferences, and learn how to be a better leader. Most of all, SGA gave me lifelong friendships with some of the most kind, generous, smart, and driven people.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS TODAY?
Take risks; you never know where an opportunity might lead you. Keep an open mind and try new things. There have been numerous scenarios in which I involved myself in an opportunity thinking that it couldn’t benefit me, but they always do. There are always new things to learn in every new experience. Involving oneself in a broad range of activities is a great way to develop well-roundedness and learn about oneself.

Mike Hightower

Congratulations Mike Hightower
This week, we are featuring Lifetime Achievement recipient, Mike Hightower, who attended from 1964 to 1966, and is currently the Chief of Public and Shareholder Affairs Officer for JEA.

MIKE, WHAT WAS YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE AT SJR STATE?
The welcoming faculty and community. When I attended SJR State there were no dorms, so the community opened up their doors to all of the students who arrived to pursue their college education. The one-on-one attention from the friendly faculty made my experience fun, yet challenging and inspiring at the same time. They wanted every student to succeed. The camaraderie also made the time spent at SJR State positive and one to remember.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS TODAY?
Take advantage of every opportunity and understand that it is more important to have an inspiring cause rather than personal ambition. Know that you will make mistakes and they should be welcomed as learning opportunities to improve; you will never know what you can do if you don’t try. Be sure to give back and thank those who have helped you along the way. Always have the ability to laugh at yourself and don’t take life too seriously; but above all else, be honest and have integrity.
