SJR State teammates named player of the week

St. Johns River State College student-athletes Reid Love and Matt Pennington have been named the player for the week by the Florida College System Activities Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Love has been named this week’s NJCAA /FCSAA Baseball Player of the Week. Love, a sophomore center fielder from Dunnellon, Fla., batted. 643 (9-for-14) with three runs scored and three doubles in three games during the voting period for the Vikings, who are Mid-Florida Conference Champions for the first time since 1977. Love put together multi-hit games against Central Florida (April 17), Seminole State (April 19) and Lake-Sumter State (April 21). Against Central Florida, he was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two doubles, in addition to picking up his eighth win on the mound. He finished the week by going 4-for-4 in a 1-0 win over Lake-Sumter State.

Pennington has been named this week’s NJCAA /FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Pennington, a sophomore from Live Oak, Fla., was 1-0 with 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period. Pennington tossed a four-hit shutout in the Vikings’ 1-0 win over Lake-Sumter State on April 21. In going the distance, all four hits allowed were singles, he walked none and struck out eight.
