SJR State student is awarded National Merit Scholarship

Christopher Battista.jpgSt. Johns River State College dual-enrollment student Christopher Battista was recently awarded a National Merit Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This program aims to support the intellectual development of the nation’s scholastically talented youth and awarded nearly 7,600 distinguished high school seniors this year for their academic excellence.

In order to receive the award, Battista competed against high school seniors across the nation through the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and the application process in 2014, which required a written essay and information that detailed his extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions. Semifinalists also needed to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed by a high school official and earn exceptional SAT scores.

Battista, a home-schooled student, plans to attend the University of Florida Honors Program in the fall and will study mechanical engineering.
