SJR State inducts 23 members into honor society

The St. Johns River State College Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently held its fall induction ceremony at the St. Augustine campus. PTK recognizes and encourages scholarship by providing two-year college students with opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship activities. Inductees are required to have completed 12 credit hours at a two-year institution and maintain a 3.5 grade point average.

Alpha Xi Eta Chapter President Anne Marie Widener greeted attendees and introduced special guests, and faculty co-advisor James McCaughern-Carucci gave the welcoming address. Melanie Brown, Ph.D., executive director of the St. Augustine campus, was the guest speaker.

In addition to the induction of new members and officers, faculty co-advisor Kim Hakala explained the purpose and history of the honor society. PTK officers provided an explanation of the regalia, and co-advisor Allison Montero discussed PTK’s activities and programs.

Chapter members inducted were: Michelle Allison, Jacob Bairen, Joseph Bonura, Charisse Clark, Monique Corrigan, Morgan Dashiell, Gianluca Dimieri, Cassidy Gatewood, Monica Greatorex, Paige Hurd, Bobby Lingold, Preston Loveday, Jacob Mauser, Taylor McKenzie, Justin McQuillen, Alexis Moeller, Kelsey Murphy, Shaya Oliver, Lucy Phipps, Brooke Santagato, Ashley Sheller, Jessica Suckow and Zoe Waldron.

Many students, such as SJR State alumnus Tristan Hood, now a student at Brown University, believe that PTK involvement largely contributes to their success. Hood recently wrote to Hakala, “While my military service and private business played a role in getting me accepted (to Brown), I have learned that my involvement with PTK, my school and my grades seemed to hold a lot of weight. I remember telling students, who were considering joining PTK, that it looks great on a resume or application. I am so grateful to know and write that this is true. The fact is, a very large portion of Brown’s decision to admit me was based upon academic merit and PTK.”
