SJR State volleyball to host first home sand match

Volleyball teamThe St. Johns River State College spring volleyball season will welcome the College’s first-ever home sand match on Friday, March 13.

SJR State volleyball coach Matt Cohen said the Lady Vikings will play South Florida State College for two matches at the St. Augustine Pier. The matches will begin at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. This marks the first time SJR State has hosted a match of this kind.

Under the direction of Cohen, now in his third year as head coach, the volleyball program has expanded to include a spring season. Cohen was enthusiastic about hitting the beach for the team’s first home game. “These are exciting times for SJR State Volleyball,” he said. “After our inaugural spring season last year, we decided that hosting a match is the next step. St. Augustine Beach is the perfect place to host, and we are excited for the opportunity to do so.”

According to Cohen, sand volleyball is the fastest-growing sport at the NCAA level. “Hopefully the NJCAA will make it an official sport soon,” Cohen said.  “It is a great recruiting tool for us.  Players from all over the country are more interested in us because of the transfer and scholarship opportunities that exist with sand volleyball at the university level.”

The home match will be free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
