SJR State student named to 2015 All-Florida Academic Team

St. Johns River State College student Jana McDermott has been named to the Florida College System’s 2015 All-Florida Academic Team, which recognizes students for academic achievement, leadership and service to the community.

McDermott completed her Associate in Arts degree at SJR State and is the president of her campus’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter. As the president, she has spearheaded campaigns such as SJR State’s fall blood drive and school supply drive to benefit a local elementary school.

Her work also includes organizing the annual PTK Christmas party for the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind as well as volunteering for organizations like the St. Augustine Wild Reserve, the Blood Alliance and Belk Charity events benefiting Relay for Life. McDermott plans to continue her education by transferring to the University of South Florida, where she hopes to earn a master’s degree in microbiology.

McDermott will be recognized at the annual awards ceremony in Tallahassee on April 9.

Students recognized by the All-Florida Academic Team are nominated by their respective colleges for the All-USA Academic Team competition sponsored by USA Today and the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society. The event recognizes outstanding students attending Florida’s state colleges, as well as institutions associated with the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida.
