2015 Student Athletes of the Year

Athletes of the Year

St. Johns River State College Athletic Director Ross Jones has announced the year’s top student-athletes. Sophomore volleyball setter Jenna Swaffer was named the female Student Athlete of the Year. A native of Henderson, Nevada, Swaffer recorded 645 digs, 79 aces, 92 blocks and 110 kills during her career as a Viking and will leave SJR State with a total of 1,894 assists – the most in Viking volleyball history. In addition, she has been named to the Florida College System Activities Association All-Academic Team, is an NJCAA Academic All-American and a Mid-Florida Conference Scholar Athlete. Swaffer recently signed with Warner University in Lake Wales, where she plans to major in exercise science.

“Jenna is very deserving of the Student Athlete of the Year award,” said Head Volleyball Coach Matt Cohen. “She has maintained a cumulative 3.85 GPA while excelling on the court and in the sand. Jenna is a hard worker who leads by example, and I couldn’t be prouder of my first recruit to SJR State.”

Viking baseball outfielder Johnny Blue-Craig was named the male Student Athlete of the Year. The sophomore from Tallahassee ended regular season play with a .255 batting average and a .451 slugging percentage, including four home runs, eight doubles, 25 RBIs and 15 runs scored. Defensively, he has a perfect fielding percentage with no errors in the 38 games in which he has played. Blue-Craig has been recognized twice as a member of the All-Conference Academic Team, twice for the All-State Academic Team, and is an NJCAA Academic All-American and Pinnacle Award Winner.

Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Ross Jones said both students symbolize the phrase student-athlete. “They are both outstanding individuals who excel in the classroom and on the field,” he said. “They are outstanding leaders in the community and perfect examples of what we at SJR State expect from out student-athletes.”
