Vikings welcome hitting coach, recruiting coordinator

St. Johns River State College Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Ross Jones announced today the hiring of Cory Elasik as an assistant baseball coach. Elasik will serve as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for the Vikings.

"We are very proud to welcome Cory to the Viking family. He is one of the most outstanding young baseball coaches in the state of Florida," Jones said. "I'm confident that Cory'’s knowledge, energy and leadership will help us to build upon the championship tradition we have established here at SJR State."

The Starke native graduated from Baker County High School in Glen St. Mary in 2009. Elasik spent two years at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, where he played for Head Coach Johnny Wiggs and was part of two Mid-Florida Conference championship teams. He was named First Team All Mid-Florida Conference in 2011. Elasik later played at NCAA Division 2 powerhouse Lynn University in Boca Raton, where he was named to the All Sunshine State Conference team as a senior.

Before joining SJR State, Elasik served as the head baseball coach at Trenton High School, where he led the Tigers to a 16-9 overall record for the 2015 season. He has also coached for Gatorball Baseball Academy in Gainesville.

"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to coach at the best junior college in the country," Elasik said. "Accepting this position was a no-brainer. I consider it a dream job, and I am very excited to move forward and hope to assist in leading the team to a national championship."

Elasik replaces Will Coggin who was recently named assistant coach at Mississippi State University. "We are going to miss Will. He dedicated his life to this baseball program the last three years and helped us achieve a level that this program has never before seen. I'm very happy for him and proud that our program here at SJR State could help him achieve his goals," Jones said.

The 2016 Viking Baseball team will begin its quest for a fourth straight Mid-Florida Conference Championship on August 24 with the first day of fall practice. Schedules for fall scrimmages and the 2016 schedule are available online at
