Over 150 students from Palatka, Crescent City Junior/Senior and Interlachen high schools recently toured the St. Johns River State College Palatka campus to get a taste of the various programs the College offers. Students kicked off their tour at the Florida School of the Arts and were guided by SJR State student-athletes to informational sessions about computer science, nursing and other workforce opportunities, admissions, financial aid, academic success, and the College’s associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs.

Jessica Lowe, a student from Crescent City Junior/Senior High School, said that the time spent at FloArts was her favorite. While visiting the FloArts gallery, she said, “I like the art, because the pictures express who you are and what you do. Art is basically what other people see about you…what the artist was feeling when creating the art. I respect everyone in all areas of the arts, because they’re expressing themselves.”

College Access Specialist Lindsay Hall, who coordinated the open house with Meghan Deputy, director of dual enrollment and college access, said SJR State’s annual open house is a wonderful opportunity to get 11th and 12th graders “thinking about their education and careers, if they haven’t already.”

The next scheduled open house will be held for eighth grade students on January 27 and 28.
