SJR State welcomes new softball coach
St. Johns River State College Athletic Director Ross Jones announced Wednesday the return of former Assistant Softball Coach Jill Semento as the Viking’s new head coach.
Jones said he is proud to announce the hiring of Semento. “Jill is a first-class and highly-professional leader of student-athletes. She had an outstanding playing career and has gained invaluable experience as the head coach at Lake-Sumter,” Jones said. “I know that Jill’s combination of personality, energy and work ethic will take SJR State softball to new heights.”
A native of Umatilla, the 26-year-old served as the Vikings’ assistant coach for the 2011-2012 season before taking the head coaching position at Lake-Sumter State College. In 2014, Semento led the Lakehawks to a program record in wins and a top 8 finish in the state.
Semento said she was excited to return to SJR State and feels she has inherited a softball program with a solid athletic and academic foundation. “I am delighted with the opportunity to continue building on SJR State’s tradition of success, and I look forward to helping the program reach its full potential,” she said.
Semento’s collegiate career includes playing for the University of South Carolina for two years before transferring to Stetson University, where she played third base for the Hatters and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. She is currently working online toward her master’s degree in coaching education from Ohio University.
