2016 Student Athletes of the Year named

Athletes of the year

St. Johns River State College Athletic Director Ross Jones has announced the year’s top student-athletes. Sophomore volleyball setter Madison Speyerer was named the female Student Athlete of the Year. A graduate of Winter Haven High School, Speyerer recorded 58.5 points, including 23 service aces, 233 digs, 787 assists and 32 kills during her 2015 season with the Vikings. She recently signed with Georgia College, where she plans to major in biology.

Sophomore catcher Harlan Harris, from Tallahassee, was named the male Student Athlete of the Year. Harris ended the Vikings’ regular season with a .313 batting average, including 19 runs, seven doubles, three home runs and 15 RBIs. He had a .982 fielding percentage for the season, committing only four errors in 228 chances. Harris will advance his academic and baseball career at Valdosta State University, where he will study computer science.

Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Ross Jones said both students symbolize the phrase student-athlete. “They are both outstanding individuals who excel in the classroom and on the field,” he said. “They are outstanding leaders in the community and perfect examples of what we at SJR State expect from out student-athletes.”
