SJR State welcomes new volleyball coach

Jose RiveraSt. Johns River State College Athletic Director Ross Jones announces Jose Rivera as the Viking volleyball team’s head coach.

Jones said he is proud to announce the hiring of Rivera. “Jose has gained invaluable experience coaching at different levels and brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to our athletic program,” Jones said. “I know that his combination of personality and work ethic will take our volleyball team to new heights.”

Rivera comes to SJR State from Florida State College at Jacksonville, where he served as the head volleyball coach for three years and 10 years as the assistant coach. His extensive career in coaching includes 12 years as director and coach for the Jacksonville Junior Volleyball Association and 13 years coaching at the university level, with a district championship and a national appearance on record.

His teaching career includes 10 years with the Duval County Public School system.

Rivera, who is on the road this spring recruiting freshman players, said he’s looking to create a new culture on the court. “One thing we’re going to do is bring a lot of fire and enthusiasm onto the court. We’re going to bring in a very high-energy group,” he said. “We’re going to be fun to watch. We’re going to be relentless. Nothing hits the ground.”

Rivera is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and a two-time Florida Region Outstanding IMPACT Instructor. Rivera holds a master’s degree in teaching from Livingston University and a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a minor in athletic training.
