St. Johns River State College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Administrative Officer Melanie Brown, Ph.D., was recently awarded the 2017 National Innovator of the Year Award by the Rural Community College Alliance at the RCCA Annual Conference in Oklahoma City. This award is designed to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding individuals who have contributed to their rural college and communities.

Brown was nominated as a result of the multiple innovative projects she has proposed and quickly implemented at SJR State. Projects include college readiness and access initiatives with grant-funded programs; developmental educational reform initiatives; the expansion of distance learning and adult education; the creation of an Honors and study-abroad programs; a scholarship program for in-district minority students that includes a mentoring program; dual-enrollment expansion; and the formation of a collegiate high school program. Additionally, Brown serves on the College’s Executive Management Team and participates in the College’s wide range of significant business matters.

According to SJR State President Joe Pickens, “Dr. Brown has consistently gone above and beyond the technical duties of her job title, and she has always exceeded my expectation. As her title would indicate, she oversees all aspects of academics for our three-campus college, including programs, faculty and students at the associate, baccalaureate and certificate level. I have come to know Dr. Brown to be an extremely talented professional who has earned the respect and admiration of the faculty, administration and staff of St. Johns River State College as well as the leadership within our community and the Florida College System due to her knowledge, energy and achievements. Dr. Brown is a dedicated professional who has a passion for students and for serving as an ambassador of the College throughout both our tri-county community and the state as a whole.”
