In celebration of 60 years of service to the community, St. Johns River State College recently held a Diamond Jubilee Gala at the Thrasher-Horne Center in Orange Park. Approximately 220 guests were in attendance.

During the Gala, special recognition was given to the College’s former president of 36 years, Dr. Robert L. McLendon Jr. President Joe Pickens concluded his address praising McLendon for his vision and commitment to the College, “He gave his life for the betterment of Clay, St. Johns and Putnam county and to the students and citizens who lived there, and I’m proud to be his successor.”

Contributing reflections and remarks during the Gala were District Board of Trustee Chairman Samuel Garrison and special guest Evelyn Hewett, 89, who was a member of the 1960 class of 22 students to first graduate from St. Johns River State College.

Twelve distinguished alumni were recognized at the Gala for exemplifying extraordinary citizenship through volunteerism, mentorship, philanthropy and advocacy.
