Florida School of the Arts will present its Musical Theatre Vocal Company Concert on Sunday, December 2 at 2:30 p.m. on the School’s main stage at the Palatka campus of St. Johns River State College. The concert, which is free and open to the public, allows students in the FloArts Musical Theatre program to showcase the skills they have developed over the semester.

Vocal Company, directed by Professor Kandie Smith, is a required course for all Musical Theatre majors at FloArts. The course focuses on the development of the skills necessary to function as a member of a musical theater ensemble at the professional level, including sight-reading, choral harmonization and choreography. “At every stage, the students are pushed to assimilate new material as quickly and accurately as possible and then execute that material at the highest level of which they are capable,” said Smith. Additional support of their professional development is provided to students who wish to hone their skills as choreographers, staging directors, assistant musical directors and vocal section leaders.

Songs performed by the Vocal Company will include “One” from “A Chorus Line” by Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban, and medleys from “Les Miserables” by Claude-Michel Schonberg, Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel, Herbert Kretzmer and arranged by Ed Lojeski; “The Phantom Of The Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart and arranged by Ed Lojeski; and “The Lion King” by Elton John and Tim Rice and arranged by Mark Brymer. A choral medley from “Hamilton” by Lin-Manuel Miranda and arranged by Lisa DeSpain will also be performed.

Vocal Company cast members include Miguel Algarin-Flores, Neal Baker, Alberto Blanco, Chad Boyd, Logen Cheatham, Anastasia Costas, Torie D’Alessandro, who is also the dance captain, Kevin Figueroa, Rebekah Herskovitz, Alantae Jackson, Hannah Johnson, Malik Johnson, Ariel LeMerle-Mousset, Melissa Moore, Emily Poehlman, Angelee Ramos, Elijah Richardson-Grant, Hayley Smith, Chris Toombs and Bradley Williams.

FloTunes, a second branch of Vocal Company with a more specialized focus on blend and artistry, will also charm the audience. FloTunes members learn sophisticated a cappella song arrangements that feature intricate harmonies. Singers accepted into FloTunes are selected for their abilities and potential as elite singers/musicians with strong sight-reading and musicianship skills, in combination with beautiful voices and proficient vocal techniques. Since inception in 2014, the FloTunes ensemble has performed at SJR State graduations and special events, and is in frequent demand for community functions.

Voice instructor and FloTunes Director Curt Tucker said, “A cappella singing in a small ensemble requires each singer to be independent on his or her own while paying careful attention to others so that the ensemble works together as one. It’s a challenge that we particularly enjoy,” he said.

Selections from FloTunes include “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Freddie Mercury and arranged by Anne Raugh and Deke Sharon; “I Jus' Wanna Come Home” from “Pinocchio” with the words and music by Tucker; “Throw the Yule Log On, Uncle John” by P. D. Q. Bach; “One Love” with music by Tomas Luis de Victoria and Tucker with words by Evan Bowen and Tucker; and “Shout” with words and music by the Isley Brothers and arranged by Sharon.

Among the five FloTunes concert selections, Tucker said that two of them are “especially unique pieces.” About "I Jus’ Wanna Come Home" from “Pinocchio,” Tucker explained, “In the 1990s, I wrote the musical score for a calypso adaptation of ‘Pinocchio,’ which was premiered by the Children's Theatre Workshop in California. This selection, originally a Jamaican folk tune, I have arranged for a cappella voices with soloists.”

Regarding "One Love,” Tucker stated that it’s a piece developed by FloTunes this semester. “It combines a 16th century a cappella motet with a contemporary musical style, both with new modern lyrics. The piece is dedicated to former Flotunes members Timothy Lake and Brandon French,” he said.

The FloTunes ensemble includes Evan Bowen, Emma Gazdecki, Ashley Leake, Facia Lee, Maria Masters, Wyatt Matlock, Noah Peacock and Samuel Williams. Leake is the student choreographer.

Student choreography and/or staging also includes Costas, D’Alessandro, Smith, Tucker and Mark Wildman.

Florida School of the Arts, which serves the entire state of Florida, is part of the academic and administrative structure of SJR State and awards the two-year associate degree. For more information, call 386-312-4300 or visit online at floarts.org.
