St. Johns River State College recently presented its annual faculty awards during the fall Faculty Convocation held at the Thrasher-Horne Center. The 2018 Distinguished New Faculty Award was presented to organizational management instructor Aaron Knowles. Mathematics instructor Thomas Flanagan received the Outstanding Faculty Award.

Executive Director of the Orange Park campus Anna Lebesch said, “Faculty are core to the success of our students and programs. These awards are an opportunity to honor individuals who demonstrate their commitment to the profession of teaching and overall success of SJR State students. Aaron and Thomas clearly exemplify this in their work here at the College.”

The Distinguished New Faculty Award, presented to an SJR State “rising star” faculty member with under five years of teaching experience, was awarded to Knowles for demonstrating strength with original instructional techniques and creative ways of thinking to successfully guide students into the future. Knowles also possesses the breadth of expertise, sensitivity, enthusiasm and dedication required for this award. Additionally, he demonstrates a strong ability to inspire students to perform beyond normal expectations and is responsive to addressing needs within and outside the classroom.

Flanagan was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Award for continuously demonstrating a commitment to the unique mission of the College and providing the highest quality of teaching and service. He was also recognized for being an inspiring, challenging and effective teacher who demonstrates concern and respect for students, both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, Flanagan makes important and extensive contributions to the field, which he shares with his peers, and demonstrates a willing and effective devotion of time and energy in useful service to the College.

Both awards were sponsored by the SJR State Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to support the growth and development of SJR State in whatever ways are beneficial to its students, faculty, staff and campus facilities. Campuses are located in Orange Park, Palatka and St. Augustine.

Celebrating 60 years of service, SJR State has built a solid reputation as a full-service college dedicated to meeting the educational and workforce training needs of its Northeast Florida district. For more information, visit the website at www.sjrstate.edu.
