Katie Tucker - Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Student
Katie Tucker understands the power of perseverance and the true meaning of the phrase, “Slow and steady wins the race.”
After graduating from Ridgeview High School in 2005, Tucker, now 31, first began her collegiate journey at St. Johns River State College (SJR State) in 2008. While working full-time as a cosmetologist and only taking classes she could afford, Tucker took five years to complete her A.A. degree. However, she didn’t let the slow pace of her academic journey stop her from continuing to put one foot in front of the other.
Once she was awarded the federal Pell Grant, Tucker became a full-time student at SJR State in 2010. Although she continued working full-time as a cosmetologist, it wasn’t her dream job.
In 2017, Tucker decided to set her sights set on a career in human resources and enrolled in SJR State’s Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Organizational Management program. She is currently in her fourth semester, taking three classes and working full-time at Chick-fil-A.
With classes covered by her Pell Grant and paying for what she can personally afford, Tucker will have completed both her A.A. and BAS degrees without having acquired any long-term debt.
Excited about what lies ahead and grateful for the support from her professors, employer, family and friends, Tucker is thrilled about her future and proud to call herself an SJR State Viking.
