SJR State to honor graduates May 3
St. Johns River State College will celebrate its spring commencement on May 3. The College will acknowledge the associate and baccalaureate degree candidates, as well as its certificate candidates, from the Orange Park, Palatka and St. Augustine campuses.
The ceremony is set for 10:00 a.m. at the Thrasher-Horne Center located on the SJR State Orange Park campus. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.
SJR State President Joe Pickens, J.D., has announced Clay County Commissioner and Chairman Mike Cella as the commencement speaker. Cella owns and operates Jumperz Fun Center in Orange Park. He also serves as the liaison and chairman of the Tourism Development Council.
In 2004, Mike was the first resident elected to the Board of Supervisors for the Fleming Island Plantation Community Development District, serving for 12 years. He served as chairman for 10 of those years. Prior to opening his business in Orange Park, Mike enjoyed a 30-year career in radio and TV broadcasting, which included announcing the TV play-by-play for the UCONN Huskies basketball championship game from Madison Square Garden in New York. He concluded his broadcasting career at WOKV Radio in Jacksonville, where he hosted the Morning Show and served as the assistant program director.
The Thrasher-Horne Center is owned and operated by SJR State and is located on the Orange Park campus at 283 College Drive.
