CONGRATULATIONS ON COMPLETING YOUR DUAL DEGREES AT UNF THIS SPRING! WE’D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR INTERNSHIPS DURING THIS PROCESS!
During the Fall of 2016, I interned at the Office of Korean Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. It was an international relations student’s dream come true, as I felt like I was at the forefront of foreign policy. There was never a dull day in the office as we often met with colleagues from the South Korea Embassy and responded to international events. I learned how foreign policy is formulated and implemented first hand while also experiencing the excitement that comes with living in our nation’s capital.
Currently, I am an intern at SS&C Advent, a financial technology firm that provides software solutions for professionals in the investment management industry. As part of the Black Diamond Training Team, we facilitate the training of new hires and clients on using the platform. Black Diamond is a cloud-based wealth management platform that helps advisors manage data and present information to investors. Advent is a very fun company to work for and is full of really cool people. It’s a great place to learn because I’m exposed to both the financial and software industries. Interning on the Training Team has allowed me to learn from very experienced professionals who have been extremely helpful in my efforts to learn more about the financial industry.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FUTURE CAREER AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS
I would like to move back to Washington, DC to pursue a graduate degree in security studies. I really enjoyed my internship at the State Department and aspire to become a foreign service officer. The lifestyle and work of the Foreign Service is very appealing to me. I think it would be exciting to work in embassies abroad representing the United States while immersing myself in other cultures.
WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES WHILE ATTENDING SJR STATE?
My fondest memories at St. Johns River State College were the times I spent with the amazing friends I came to know through the Student Government Association. Together, we made a music video, built a boat and raced it, organized campus events, and attended conferences across the state. We had so much fun while also building each other up to become better versions of ourselves.
My time at SJR State was most beneficial because opportunities were readily available for me to develop myself as a student and a leader. Instructors like Professor Wilson made math fun to learn with his ingenious puns, and Professor Fox laid the foundation for my Spanish studies with his highly-animated teaching style. Mr. Tomasovitch, our SGA advisor, did a phenomenal job at facilitating our growth both personally and professionally. On many occasions, he took the personal responsibility for ensuring that we had the resources to work toward our goals. It is because of the people mentioned, and many more like them, that I am better prepared to face the world after graduating from SJR State.
DID YOU RECEIVE ANY AWARDS WHILE ATTENDING SJR STATE?
I was inducted into the St. Johns River State College 2015 Hall of Fame and the 2015 Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges & Universities.
PLEASE SHARE WITH US YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK
I am currently a UNF Presidential Envoy; we serve as student ambassadors for the Office of the President and the Alumni Association by assisting with events related to the university. We also volunteer in the Jacksonville community with various nonprofits.
