Each month, St. Johns River State College will honor one of its own in an alumni salute, celebrating the career milestones, community contributions and personal reflections of those who began their collegiate journey as SJR State Vikings.

CHIEF GUZMAN, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO STUDY AT SJR STATE?
I enrolled at SJR State to complete the Law Enforcement Academy so I could fulfill my dream of becoming a police officer.

WHAT/WHO IMPACTED YOU THE MOST DURING YOUR TIME AT SJR STATE?
The great instructors from various law enforcement agencies, and our main class instructor who was a former chief of police.

WHERE DID YOU CONTINUE YOUR EDUCATION?
I obtained my bachelor’s degree from Vincennes University, and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree with the University of Florida.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE CONSIDERING SJR STATE?
I think SJR State has a great criminal justice program, filled with professionals who care.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR CAREER?
The ability to protect people and offer a sense of security to our community is extremely rewarding to me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE CONSIDERING A CAREER IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE?
A career in law enforcement is not meant for everyone, but it is an extremely noble and selfless profession. You can’t come to this career in search of riches, we do this because we care and want to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
