Job opportunities exist in sheriff’s offices, police departments, state and federal law enforcement agencies, government intelligence agencies, financial institutions, private security firms and corporate security departments.
Is the Applied Intelligence Studies program fully online?
Yes, this degree is fully online. There are additional pathways to the degree through the A.S. degree in Criminal Justice and the new A.S. degree in Crime Scene and Forensic Science starting Fall 2026 at SJR State.
Do I need a background in criminal justice to enter this program?
No. The degree is open to students from all academic backgrounds who have an interest in intelligence, investigation, research or security careers.
What skills will I gain in the AIS program?
Students learn intelligence analysis, research techniques, information evaluation, written reporting (how about technical writing skills or professional writing skills), threat assessment, critical thinking and the use of industry software and tools.
Does this program prepare students for federal agency careers?
Yes. The degree provides a strong foundation for careers with agencies such as the FBI, DHS, CIA and other federal organizations. All agency hiring requirements still apply.
How long does it take to complete the program?
Students who begin with an Associate in Arts degree can typically complete the program in two years with full-time enrollment.
Is this degree useful for private sector careers?
