What does a paralegal do?
Paralegals are an indispensable part of the legal team, providing high-level support to attorneys by conducting legal research, drafting crucial documents, preparing for hearings, supporting clients, and actively managing cases from investigation through trial.
Do paralegals need a license?
Paralegals are not licensed attorneys, and no state requires a paralegal license. However, to demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and advanced legal knowledge, many employers prefer candidates who have graduated from a comprehensive paralegal studies program such as the one offered by SJR State.
Can I work in a law firm right after graduation?
Yes. Many students secure entry-level paralegal or legal assistant positions immediately after completing the A.S. degree.
Are classes available online?
Yes, the Paralegal Studies program is a fully online program.
Can I continue toward a bachelor’s degree?
Yes. Graduates may pursue a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management at SJR State.
What skills will I learn?

Do paralegals appear in court?
Paralegals do not represent clients or argue cases in court, as only licensed attorneys are authorized to do so. However, paralegals are essential to the trial team, often attending hearings and trials to assist the attorney by managing exhibits, taking detailed notes, and locating critical documents on demand.
What areas of law can I work in?
Your comprehensive training opens doors to over two dozen areas of law, allowing you to work in highly specialized fields or broad practice areas. While you can work in almost any niche, the most common specializations include Litigation, Corporate Law, Real Estate, Family Law, Bankruptcy, and Intellectual Property.
Does the program include hands-on experience?
