Florida School of the Arts presents Musical Theatre Vocal Company and FloTunes Concert
Centered around a musicals jukebox theme, Florida School of the Arts will present its Musical Theatre Vocal Company Concert on Sunday, December 8 at 2:30 p.m. on the School’s main stage at the Palatka campus of St. Johns River State College. The concert is free and open to the public.
“I have chosen the theme of jukebox musicals as the connecting thread,” said music professor and concert director Kandie Smith. “A jukebox musical is a film or live-staged musical featuring the music of popular recording artists or groups. Each of our selections was first known to audiences as popular recording(s)."
Concert selections will include "C'mon Everybody,” which was most famously recorded by Elvis Presley and heard in the movie “Viva Las Vegas.” “Finale” from the musical “Movin' Out” includes the previously recorded songs "River of Dreams" and "Keeping the Faith" by Billy Joel. Songs in “Choral Highlights” from Jersey Boys were first made famous by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Songs from “Mamma Mia! Choral Highlights” were previously recorded by ABBA.
Most of the MTVC concert numbers have been choreographed by FloArts alumni Mark Anthony Wilder and Mitchel Burns. “These young men are now officially in their first year post-FloArts, and both have already begun making their marks in the professional world of theater,” said Smith.
The Vocal Company includes Miguel Algarin-Flores, Neal Baker, Liam Carroll, Viktoria Fancsali, Suzannah Gaston, Allison Gelis, Kira Heuring, Hannah Johnson, Peyton Kalaczynski, Austin Kelley, Carly Mignella, Tori Rasmus, Kellin Ronquille and Brandis Stanford.
FloTunes, a second branch of Vocal Company with a more specialized focus on blend and artistry, will also charm the audience. FloTunes members learn sophisticated a cappella song arrangements that feature intricate harmonies. Singers accepted into FloTunes are selected for their abilities and potential as elite singers/musicians with strong sight-reading and musicianship skills, in combination with beautiful voices and proficient vocal techniques. Since its inception in 2014, the FloTunes ensemble has performed at SJR State graduations and special events, and is in frequent demand for community functions.
Voice instructor and FloTunes Director Curt Tucker said, “A cappella singing in a small ensemble requires each singer to be independent on his or her own while paying careful attention to others so that the ensemble works together as one. It’s a challenge that we particularly enjoy,” he said.
The FloTunes ensemble includes Chad Boyd, Courtney Burnett, Logen Cheatham, Rebekah Herskovitz, Wyatt Matlock and Elijah Richardson Grant.
Florida School of the Arts is part of the academic and administrative structure of SJR State and awards the two-year associate degree.
