Florida School of the Arts honors graduates - 2020

Florida School of the Arts recently bid farewell to graduates now on their way to pursue careers in art galleries, on stage or behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. Many will continue their education at universities before finding their niche in the arts.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the graduates were honored via a virtual ceremony that included an exhortation reading of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" by Jahleel Quentin Austin Randle Christian, and a vocal presentation by Jonathan Larson featuring "Seasons of Love" from the Broadway musical "Rent," arranged by Roger Emerson.

During the ceremony, FloArts Dean Alain Hentschel encouraged the graduates to go forward with chins held high and to conquer the world against all odds. "In spite of current restrictions — you can still create a space to work on your skills. After all, you can take this time that is exempted from the usual fiercely competitive life of an artist to sharpen yourself, to prepare for the opportunities that will erupt from a pent-up society that may in retrospect be a source of inspiration," Hentschel said.

Three graduates were presented with awards of excellence. The Outstanding Graduate for Performing Arts was awarded to Victoria Rosa D’Alessandro. Shonda Lynn Hardy received the Outstanding Graduate for Visual Arts Award. Both the Outstanding Graduate for Design and Technical Theatre and the Outstanding Graduate for Academic Achievement awards were presented to Marissa L. Mendez.
