Woman’s Club of Palatka awards scholarships to SJR State students
The GFWC Woman's Club of Palatka recently awarded three scholarships to St. Johns River State College (SJR State) students who reside in Putnam County. According to the Woman’s Club of Palatka President Linda Priest, "We are just so excited, because the funds stayed right here in Putnam County."
Each year, the Woman's Club of Palatka donates scholarships to students, but this was the first year the Club partnered with the SJR State Foundation. As a result of the Foundation matching the funds donated by the Woman’s Club of Palatka, a total of $4,000 in scholarships was awarded to SJR State students Victoria Costa, Shantelle Cuzzo-Marmelejo and Tim Frauenhofer.
“It is an amazing partnership,” said Priest. “Through the partnership with St. Johns River State College Foundation, we were able to double the amount of money we could offer and provide more scholarships. We are so grateful that St. Johns River State College had these opportunities. I am excited to hear more about our recipients, and I look forward to doing it again next year," she said.
The scholarships were presented during a luncheon hosted by the Club. Frauenhofer said that he has “always placed high importance on education," adding that he has earned his associate's degree and is now working on his bachelor's degree.
The $2,000 scholarship that Frauenhofer received will help cover out-of-pocket expenses that add up, such as books. "When you have a family and work full time, things can get hectic, so this scholarship really helps me out a lot with achieving my goals and dreams," said Frauenhofer, who plans on joining the Florida Highway Patrol and looks forward to his degree serving as a valuable tool for his career advancement.
Costa is breathing a sigh of relief, thanks to the $1,000 scholarship she received. She said that this award allows her to work less and focus more on her studies while completing four prerequisite classes before applying to SJR State's nursing program. Costa is also grateful for her scholarship taking some of the financial pressure off of her parents. “I’m very grateful for that,” she said.
SJR State Director of Fundraising and Alumni Engagement Brian Bergen is also grateful for the various ways scholarship partnerships assist SJR Students and their families. “It's exciting to have civic club partners who are willing to provide scholarships for students at SJR State,” he said.
