PRESS RELEASE: NOVEMBER 30, 2023
SJR State offers GED seekers new skills for the new year
The Adult Education department at St. Johns River State College wants to give GED students a fresh start in 2024 with free skills training and a job-ready resume in just four months.
The Integrated Education and Training (IET) program is designed to provide students with additional training in career-specific areas while preparing for their GED. Beginning in January, students who enroll in the IET program can “skill up” and earn a Paraprofessional or a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification at no additional cost. In partnership with the Florida Department of Education, the program is included in the one-time GED prep $30 registration fee.
According to IET coordinator Colby Hazouri, it’s perfect timing for anyone considering starting the new year earning their high school diploma. Students can choose between two skill paths - those earning the Paraprofessional certification will develop essential teaching and classroom management skills. Students earning the Microsoft Office certification will gain hands-on experience for entry-level positions in various office settings with new skill sets in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Seating is limited. Those interested are encouraged to inquire today at 386-312-4080 or at https://www.sjrstate.edu/adulted.
Students can choose from face-to-face classes that run January 8 through April 26 at SJR State’s Palatka campus, Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or they can choose to attend online at their own convenience. The cost for the full semester is $30. Enrollment is ongoing and open for students who are 16 years of age and older.
SJR State’s adult education program is available for individuals who wish to improve their skills and/or prepare to earn a Florida high school diploma through the General Educational Development (GED) program. The program consists of self-paced and computer-assisted instruction, use of textbooks and handouts, and dedicated, qualified instructors. Registration for the test prep classes is ongoing.
The General Education Development (GED) exam is a computer-based exam and is administered on the SJR State Palatka campus. There are four subject areas to the test, and test-takers may take up to two subject areas per day. The GED test is administered at SJR State’s Palatka campus on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
