Today, St. Johns River State College dedicated the new softball batting cage to a long-time supporter of SJR State students and athletics, Joyce Oliver.

Oliver has always had a heart for helping others. When she saw the need for a batting cage for the SJR State softball team, she stepped up to the plate. Her generosity and determination helped build this new facility for the team.

“The team and I are very grateful to Mrs. Oliver for providing our batting cage,” said Joe Pound, SJR State Softball Coach. “I’m sure many homeruns and wins will come from practice here.”

Oliver has served on the SJR State Athletic Association for 13 years and was recently elected vice chair. “Joyce Oliver is an amazing and caring person whose generosity and support for SJR State athletics is immeasurable,” said John Raymond Theobold, SJR State Athletic Association Chair. “Her devotion and commitment to helping our students at the highest level is most admirable and has certainly assisted in their success in the classroom and on the field.”

In addition to her support for SJR State athletics, she serves on the SJR State Education Foundation and personally provides scholarships for Putnam County high school graduates. Oliver believes in providing opportunities for students to “work toward their life goals.”

A well-known advocate for Putnam County, Oliver serves many community organizations and continues her husband’s legacy with The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida supporting work with food insecurity, veterans and children.

“Without community leaders like Joyce Oliver, many students would not reach their potential,” SJR State President Joe Pickens said. “She recognizes potential and invests in it. This is how we create a community that flourishes. Thank you, Joyce!”
