PRESS RELEASE: APRIL 4, 2024

SJR State to host Solar Eclipse Watch Party

For thousands of years, solar eclipses have been considered a phenomenon that has influenced generations - from religions and scientists to scholars and poets.

St. Johns River State College will host a Solar Eclipse Watch Party on Monday, April 8, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Special eclipse viewing glasses will be distributed (while supplies last) at the Palatka, Orange Park and St. Augustine campuses. Telescopes will also be at each campus viewing area.

While Florida is not in the path of totality (where people will see the moon completely cover the sun, at 3:05 pm) the eclipse will be at its peak and 70% of the sun will be eclipsed by the moon.

Enthusiasts are reminded that the only safe way to look directly at the sun during an eclipse is through special-purpose solar filters, like eclipse glasses.
