United Way Grant Expands Student Mental Health Support at SJR State
Thanks to a grant from United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties, St. Johns River State College is expanding access to free mental health counseling for students.
According to SJR State Ombud Chelsea West, students currently have access to a virtual counseling platform through the Student Support Ombuds Office; however, funding constraints limit the number of free sessions with licensed mental health professionals.
“Although three sessions can help students navigate an immediate challenge, it is often not enough time for them to develop sustainable coping strategies or make meaningful progress toward long-term mental wellness,” West said.
Over the past year, West said more than 30% of students served through the Ombuds Office disclosed a mental health concern, with nearly half requesting additional sessions beyond the initial free sessions.
“The $7,000 in funding from United Way will allow us to increase the number of counseling sessions and provide more meaningful mental health support when they need it most,” West said. The platform allows students to schedule appointments during evenings, weekends, and other times that fit their academic and personal responsibilities.
Carl Cricco, President & CEO for United Way of St. Johns & Putnam Counties, said students shouldn’t have to choose between their responsibilities and getting the mental health support they need. “This grant will help St. Johns River State College expand access to flexible, professional counseling, so students can get help when and where it works for them. We’re proud to invest in resources that support students’ well-being and help them succeed in the classroom and beyond.”
In addition, the platform provides utilization and outcome data, where the College can track the impact of grant funding, including student participation, session attendance, credit utilization, and student satisfaction.
