SJR STATE SCHOLARSHIPS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
St. Johns River State College offers a wide range of scholarships to help students pay for college. Whether you are a new, returning or adult learner, the SJR State Foundation provides funding opportunities based on financial need, academics, career goals and personal circumstances. With just one application, you can be considered for multiple scholarships
Who can apply?
Any new or returning SJR State student, full time or part time, is eligible to apply for scholarships. You do not need to be registered yet, only planning to attend.
Can dual enrollment students apply now?
No. Dual enrollment students are not eligible while dual enrolled. You may apply during your senior year of high school if you plan to attend SJR State after graduation.
What kinds of scholarships are available?
The SJR State Foundation offers many different scholarships. Awards may be based on financial need, academic performance, program of study, career goals, or personal circumstances. One application automatically places you in the pool for all Foundation scholarships.
Do I need to write scholarship essays?
Yes. Applicants must complete two short scholarship essays (300 to 500 words each):
- Essay 1: Personal Experience or Challenge What experience or challenge has shaped who you are today, and how has it influenced your future goals?
- Essay 2: Community, Leadership or Innovation Describe a time when you used creativity, leadership or innovation to solve a problem or make a positive impact.

Is there a specific format, such as APA or MLA?
No. Just type your answers directly in the application. Keep them personal and authentic. (AI-generated essays are discouraged.)
What if I go over the word limit?
The system may cut you off. Stay within 300 to 500 words.
Can I save the scholarship application and finish later?
Yes. You can log back in and continue working until you click “Finalize and Submit.”
How will I know if I have been awarded a scholarship?
Scholarship notifications are sent by email. Use a valid personal email address, not your high school account.
Where does the scholarship money go?
Scholarship funds are applied directly to your SJR State student account after you complete the acceptance paperwork.
Do I need to reapply every year?
Yes. Scholarships are awarded for one academic year, so you must submit a new application annually.
Can I apply for FAFSA too?
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Some scholarships require FAFSA, and completing the FAFSA may qualify you for additional state or federal financial aid. Even if you do not receive federal aid, FAFSA can strengthen your scholarship eligibility.
I am an adult returning to college. Do I really have a chance?
Absolutely. Many donors specifically support nontraditional students returning to school to complete their degree or start a new career.
