SJR State offers Integrated Education and Training program for Adult Ed students

The Adult Education department at St. Johns River State College (SJR State) now offers the Integrated Education and Training (IET) program, which provides training in basic office and computer skills in addition to reading, math and writing skills presented from a technology and business operations point of view. In addition to strengthening technology office skills and improving workforce skills, students enrolled in the IET program have the opportunity to earn the CompTIA IT Fundamental certification in one semester, making them eligible to apply for entry level IT jobs, as well as office worker and customer service roles.

According to the Florida Department of Education’s website, fldoe.org, “An Integrated Education and Training program blends a range of education and training services to build learners’ foundational, employability and occupational skills ... IET models are one of the most effective innovations to date, as they ensure adult learners have access to credentials of value. Through IET programs, adults seek goal-oriented, relevant, practical knowledge. Students with family and work responsibilities can offset the opportunity costs of education when IET truly leads to educational and economic mobility."

Classes for the current semester will be held, in person, until April 29 at SJR State’s Palatka campus, Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The IET program will be offered again in the summer and fall semesters. The cost for the full semester is $30. Enrollment is ongoing and open for students who are 16 years of age and older with an interest in office work or technology and at least a level 4 (middle school) reading level based on the TABE scoring system.

According to SJR State Dean of Adult Education Melissa Perry, “Everyone has their own journey, and we accept everyone who comes through our doors. Everyone’s dreams matter. We recognize that no one comes here to fail, and we do our best to provide all the support we can. In today’s world, people want hope,” Perry continued. “They want life, and they want light. Whether it’s adult education or college or technical training, I believe the best thing we can do for people is to give them that hope, life and light, and get them to believe and invest in themselves.”
