Alex adult education spotlight

Alex is enrolled in the latest Adult Education program at SJR State – Integrated Educational Training. Alex is combining computer and office skills, along with the GED basics. The IET program is strengthening his technical skill sets and will prepare him for a career pathway to greater family-sustaining wages.

Upon completion of the program, he will have the opportunity to earn the CompTIA IT Fundamental certification in one semester, where he will be eligible to apply for entry level IT jobs, as well as office worker and customer service roles.

ALEX, WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES LED TO YOUR DROPPING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL?
I felt that school was too much for me as a person. I felt too discouraged in myself to continue going to school. I had no emotional support from my family. I felt that I could live without an education, but I was wrong. Turns out, I need a high school diploma to attend any kind of college to reach my dream career.

WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT WHERE YOU REALIZED YOU NEEDED YOUR GED?
I was at work and I realized that I did not want to work at a job with no salary, no retirement or 401K. I realized I needed a salary wage job, with good benefits that can take me from the everyday life of living paycheck to paycheck.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR CLASSES AT SJR STATE?
That the teachers are here for you. They are very patient and caring with their students. Also, the classes are self-paced, so you can finish and start on your own time.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF WHILE AT SJR STATE?
That I can fall and pick myself up.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN IMPROVING YOUR TECHNOLOGY SKILLS?
The program will help me learn short cuts through the tech world.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
I would like to be finished with my college education. I want to be a surgical nurse for the hospitals.

TECHNOLOGY IS HERE TO STAY!
Be sure you have the computer and office skills to make the most of your future. The more you learn, the more you earn!
